She moved to California and met and married James Hoover. When James was appointed by then Governor Ronald Reagan to the California Parole Board they and most of their 13 children moved to Placerville in 1973. The 50acre property they purchased was to become known as Hooverville Orchards. HER VISION After James passed away Bar- bara decided she wanted to keep farming and continue bringing the original 50-acre parcel back to life and diversify what was grown. Improvements included a Bakeshop and a cold storage area that were built in 1991. Barbara loved baking pies and her tasty creations are sold to customers coming to purchase locally grown produce. BEAUTIFUL SETTING 2740 Hwy 50 Apple Hill 530-626-8144 14 THE STORY OF In the winter of 1855 the only man willing to haul the mail from Placerville over the Sierra Nevada mountain range 10 000 feet of snow-crested granite disappeared. Having no luck as a gold miner a 28-year-old Norwegian named John Thompson told the postmaster that he would take over the job of carrying the mail on his back over the Sierra. With no guarantee of getting paid he was soon carrying sacks of letters weighing 60 to 90 pounds over the snowy peaks. Leaving Placerville (elevation 1 800 feet) every two weeks he hiked over 8 000 vertical feet up to the Sierra summit then down to Genoa Nevada near Carson City. The first half of the journey Placerville to the peak took two days. That was the snowshoe part. But from there it was all downhill and Thompson could generally ski to Genoa in only one day. People began calling him Snowshoe Thompson. Once he carried a printing press over the mountains section by section. Thompson carried no mosquito repellent or other personal items no sleeping bag or tent. Just beef jerky and biscuits to fuel his journey through rain sleet or snow. Once he skied through a snarling pack of wolves having a meal on the trail. For 13 years Snowshoe Thompson carried the mail over the Sierra and never saw a paycheck. The Placerville postmaster had never been given authority to issue one. In 1868 the railroad succeeded in spanning the Sierras and Thompson s services were no longer needed. Thompson traveled to Washington D.C. on the very train that had cost him his job. He carried with him a petition signed by 1 000 postal customers describing the services he had performed and asking Congress to recognize his right to compensation. Congress however was in the throes of the cashstrapped Reconstruction Period and Thompson s request was denied. He was told that without a written contract he had no claim. Back home in Genoa grateful postal customers rallied around Thompson raising enough money to buy him a small ranch near his home town. He died there four years later. A statue of Snowshoe Thompson stands today in Placerville on the corner of Sacramento and Main Streets. West EL DORADO COUNTY 89 193 49 89 50 El Dorado49 Hills 88 EL DORADO HILLS Elevation 765 ft. His father Carl migrated from Denmark in 1914. After graduation from high school George joined the Air Force. When he returned home he worked with his father in their pear orchards and found time to also race motorcycles. In 1961 he purchased the Gatlin Ranch which he renamed High Hill Ranch. HIS VISION At first the orchard consisted mostly of pears but pear blight disease changed that. The next few years were difficult as the newly planted apple trees matured to production. High Hill started as a fruit stand but began to diversify with a cider mill that was housed in a 100 foot mine. At one point even helicopter rides were offered. Over the years High Hill evolved into what it is today. People like High Hill because it s real. It is a family affair with both my sons - Jerry and David hosting 100 000 guests during the fall season. High Hill produces an amazing array of products approximately 45 000 pies gallons and gallons of cider caramel apples as far as the eye can see and even apple donuts. George is proud that everything we sell here is made here . Visitors also love to watch cider being made and trying their luck in the famous fish pond. High Hill hosts events ranging from weddings to the Police Memorial Run . STRENGTH OF CHARACTER George has worked hard to grow his trees and business. The soil is deep here and the heritage is long. CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY The Visman family history runs deep. In addition to George his brother Carl and son Brad run Boa Vista Orchards - a year round fruit stand. El Dorado County Farm Trails is a non-profit organization comprised of local farmers. Farmers Markets Since its inception in 1990 one of its goals has been to foster and promote the preservation of the county s small farms and ranches and to showcase their activities and products. One way we achieve this goal is to start and sponsor certified farmers markets featuring local produce and goods. Farm Trails supports the 100 mile diet. We are very lucky to live in an area that is rich in agriculture. Supporting local farmers that don t have to drive over 100 miles to get to our markets means that we know the produce at our markets is fresh ripened on the tree vine and usually picked just hours before it is sold. Most of our farms are close to our markets so they travel fewer miles to sell their produce which means less pollution in the air while supporting our regional economy and helping preserve small farms. Supporting agriculture is a global goal not just limited to our county. Not every farmer at our markets is from El Dorado County or a member of Farm Trails. We realize that allowing farmers from neighboring counties expands the range of products you can offer your customers while still supporting agriculture. Farm Trails specializes in boutique certified farmers markets that offer variety and the freshest produce and products to everyone. We look at the markets we sponsor as a service to the community and not a money making opportunity. Our 1 goal is to promote agriculture and create a place the community gathers every week and is able to buy locally grown fresh produce. We want the markets we sponsor to create a sense of community and family. Where some markets focus on how many booth spaces they can fill Farm Trails tries El Dorado County Farm Trails to round out their markets with a variety of quality products offered. Proceeds is proud to start a new Certiearned by our markets go to research and fied Farmers Market hosted at open new markets in areas that we feel the Home Depot in Folsom. would benefit from having a farmers The Home Depot has a long market. Follow Ice House Road for 24.3 miles to a right turn to Loon Lake. Proceed 4.5 miles to the road into Loon Lake Campground. If the campground gate is closed you will have to park outside of the campground entrance. There are five routes in this area with the easiest being the 1.25-mile one to Loon Lake Chalet. Walk through the service gate and go 0.2 miles down the road to find the start of the trail on your left. Look for a blue diamond marker in a tree ahead of you. Throughout the trail you will find blue diamonds on trees as well as ribbons on branches to help mark your way. Always look ahead to the next marker before going forward. If you look backwards you will see the diamonds on the other side of the tree for your return trip (you also have your own tracks to follow on your return). After 0.5 mile the trail crosses an asphalt service road. Look ahead in your original direction across the road and spot your next blue diamond marker. In another 0.1 mile you will reach a pond and depending on the amount of water you may need to divert around it before getting to your next marker. At 0.75 mile you will reach a gravel service road to a power plant. The main road is immediately to your left. Walk up to the main road and go right 0.15 mile to the Chalet. You will see the sign for the Loon Lake Chalet on your left. The Chalet provides a great picnic spot with a large deck and benches and tables (and toilet facilities). Private parties can rent the Chalet but you should still be able to enjoy the outdoor deck. Looking out from the deck you can see two more hikes Chipmunk Bluff and Berts Lake. The trail is 1.5 miles to Chipmunk Bluff and 0.9 miles to Berts Lake but both have more elevation gain than the Chalet route making for a greater difficulty. Wanna stay play and rent the Chalet Call the Pacific Ranger Station or visit www.recreation.gov and search Loon Lake Chalet for information.
