Lexington Avenue. Recently their entire property was flooded. Mr. Morris said he feels certain the flooding was the result of the construction on Macomber Ball Park. In a written statement sent to The Spirit Newspaper Morris said A construction project at Macomber Park in Rincon has diverted large amounts of rain water onto our property and has flooded our garage and under our house. An area of 20 acres or more is being filled in and drainage was not sufficiently improved to accommodate the amount of water that is being diverted. The flooding is so bad that if it happens again we may have to consider moving immediately. They are still bringing in dirt without improving the drainage. We are in contact with an attorney to file an abatement if necessary. We are directly behind the park. To our knowledge no one was affected to the extent that we were. The Morris s were recently presented with a letter from the City of Rincon dated January 20 2010. The letter began with the sentence Flooding is the most frequent and costly disaster for a community the Morris s were informed that their property specifically cited in the letter has been mapped into a higher risk zone known as a Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA). According to Morris he was told the letters were sent certified mail to those households impacted by a 2010 remapping of flood prone areas in Rincon. Morris said he never received the letter and that it was presented a copy of it by an official at Rincon City Hall along with what he believes is a forged return receipt for the letter. Morris works for the U.S. Postal Service and said he intends to file a complaint regarding the allegedly forged receipt. I know a letter was sent to the residence said Travis Grubbs Manager of Building and Zoning for the City of Rincon. The remapping appears on new documents called Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps or DFIRMs. In the Morris s case their property was rated A which according to the letter is the level of highest risk of flooding. The letter explained that flood risks to properties changes with time due to erosion land use weather events and other factors. Morris said that when his wife and her ex-husband purchased the home in 2001 it was not in a flood zone so no flood insurance was purchased. What an A designation means as to an actual risk can vary from one property to another but it is understood that any property with that rating is at some appreciable risk of flooding and that flood insurance is required. Morris s complaint is that the construction encroached upon a floodplain. He said the dirt from the construction eroded rapidly down a hill during several hard rains causing the contractor s erosion barriers to fail pouring large amounts of mud into the drainage creek that is required by law to be available and flowing freely in order to accommodate run-off. Since it could not the water flooded his property and to some extent the neighborhood. Morris said that after he had spoken to the contractors about hiring a lawyer they began running extra loads of dirt to the erosion site. He said that dump trucks are bringing loads of dirt to the area as late as 10pm. I also talked to some workers at the site and they said they have been having a heck of a time getting the dirt to stay put said Morris. [They] said that it won t compact and just keeps washing down the hill to the creek and filling it in. The creek used to be three feet ACCORDiNg TO AT LEAST ONE LOCAL RESiDENT Police Reports Port WentWorth Just before 6pm an Officer was southbound on Hwy 21 passing Rice Mill road when he noticed the moped travelling northbound. The driver wasn t wearing a helmet so the Officer turned around to make a traffic stop. When he pulled the man over he recognized him from previous stops and quickly recognized the odor of alcohol on the man. He asked him if he would be willing to take the field sobriety tests and the man replied Yeah... I know what happened the last time I refused He blew .186 and failed the series of tests. He was also carrying a mostly empty bottle of Mr. Boston vodka. The Officer allowed the man to call his 11 year old daughter to come and pick up the frozen Coles Garlic Bread he had in a Food Lion shopping bag and then he was taken to jail for DUI. A Hardeeville man has been arrested for impersonating a Police Officer. The man was stopped on Hwy 21 near I-95 while eating a donut. At 5am an Officer was eastbound on Hwy 30 approaching the railroad overpass and clocked a westbound Mustang just cresting the overpass at 91mph. He made a traffic stop and recognized the driver from previous stops. He then called for another Officer who could also speak Spanish. He knew the driver didn t have a license but asked him for one anyway. I just wanna go home the man said. He was arrested for DUI again and taken to jail. Just before 3am an Officer stopped a Chevy Trailblazer for not having working tag lights. The driver admitted that his license was suspended so the Officer placed him under arrest. He then searched the vehicle before having it towed and found a marijuana bud on the floorboard leading to an additional charge of possession of marijuana. effingham County Sheriff S offiCe A boy was sitting in his high school class with his foot appar____________________________________ Continued on page A3 deep and now it is less than one foot deep from filling in with the sand from the site. Rincon City Manager Wesley Corbitt told The Spirit that he was surprised that Morris had contacted the paper so soon. Corbitt said Morris had lodged his complaint with the city just four days ago. We haven t had a chance to look into it yet said Corbitt. We don t really know if it has anything to do with the ball field. Morris said he made the city aware of the problem a week ago. In the National Flood Insurance Program s (NFIPs) Floodplain Requirements Section D discusses Encroachments. An encroachment is where the development is taking place on a floodplain that sits closely adjacent to another s property. A portion of Section D reads D. ENCROACHMENTS Once a permit application is received and the proposed project is ready for review the next job is to ensure that the project will not impose flood problems on other properties. Basic rule 3 Development must not increase the flood hazard on ____________________________________ Continued on page A5 By Dr. Gary L. Welton My InherItance The great 20th century novelist Chaim Potok wrote in his novel My Name Is Asher Lev You have a gift Asher Lev. You have a responsibility. My Mom had a gift of 89 years 89 years to live her life 89 years to meet her goals 89 years. This gift of time for Mom for all of us is also a responsibility. You have a gift. You have a responsibility. When Mom moved into her last earthly home at The Home she could no longer walk. She had lost her husband twice. She was losing her memory. She had given up her home. She had lost much of her freedom. We asked many people to pray for her and I prayed that she could walk again. I prayed that she could move back to a lesser level of care. I prayed that we could play Scrabble again. I prayed for her in her times of weakness. But she wasn t finished. She had a gift of eleven more months. She had a gift. She had a responsibility. The first time I ate with Mom at The Home I looked at her held her hand and asked her to say grace. I expected her to thank God for the food and I expected her to pray for her own needs as she recovered from surgery. But instead I heard her say Father help me to be a blessing to the people in my new home. She had a gift of time she had a responsibility. Over the next few weeks as the staff got to know Mom sometimes they would have trouble remembering her name. Bethel House of God is not your typical modern name and it took the staff quite understandably a while to learn it. When they couldn t remember her name we often heard them say something like You mean the nice lady who lives at the end of the hall That was my Mom she was already fulfilling her responsibility. Mother learned to meet her responsibility Love your neighbor as yourself. She demonstrated a kind attitude contentment calmness great appreciation for everyone who served her in any way. At The Home they cried for Mom when she died. Those who worked with Mom those who lived with Mom had become part of her life. They were a blessing to each other. Their lives became raveled together with ours. Mom had a gift she fulfilled her responsibility. Mother you have passed so many gifts on to those who knew you. Thank you for your gifts. If I can meet my responsibilities onetenth as much as you did I will honor you your memory and our God. Thank you Mom for your legacy thank you for my inheritance. Dr. Gary L. Welton is assistant dean for institutional assessment professor of psychology at Grove City College and a contributor to The Center for Vision & Values. ABERCORN I-95 EXIT 94 (HWY. 204) 912-961-0424 Maxine Waters Set to Run Finance if Dems Win House in 14 By John Ransom B a r a c k Obama has promised to take back the United States House of Representatives in 2014 by using his Organizing for Action superhero super PAC as his weapon. And if that happens the country faces the prospect of this old socialist Rep. Maxine Waters (DGraft Theft Shakedown) becoming the chair of the House Financial Services committee. Just imagine super-liberals Sens. Ron Wyden (DDeathState) or Chuck Shumer (DEastCoast) teaming up with Waters to re-write Dodd-Frank banking law to make it more liberal. But so far B.O. s money superstorm disguised as a PAC has made a lot of noise but hasn t even ruffled feathers on the left side of the aisle let alone amongst Republicans. OFA s pledge to punish senators who voted against gun control was the first big test of the group s reach reports Politico and undoubtedly a difficult one given that many of the senators voting no were in deep-red states where Obama lost badly. Even measured against those odds there are almost no successes to point to the group didn t sway a single vote for the background check proposal and so far they haven t been able to make any of those who voted against it feel any heat. But it would be unwise for America to get too comfortable. Again Just imagine super-liberals Sens. Ron Wyden (D-DeathState) or Chuck Shumer (D-EastCoast) teaming up with Waters to re-write Dodd-Frank to make it more liberal. While there has been some talk about scratching Maxine Waters as the replacement for Barney Frank on the House Financial Service Committee by the look of the googly eyes Democrats are making at each other don t count on Dems to do the decent thing. The decent thing would be have Go-to-Hell Maxine step aside for a less ethically challenged liberal- you know if there are any. As Ezra Klein pointed out in his WonkBlog however the top contender to push Waters aside and replace Frank Democrat Rep. Caroline Maloney waged something of an equivocal insurgency that likely depended more upon the results of the ethics investigation into Waters banking relationships than any outward campaign that Maloney can mount. Look for Maxine to continue to lobby for the top Democrat spot on the finance committee look for Maloney to wait in the background for an ethics charge to undo Maxine and look for the GOP to keep up enough pressure to embarrass the Democrats but not quite alive enough to do Maxine in just yet. Late summer 2014 should be time enough to pillory That Old Socialist in front of a TV audience full of millions of registered voters. As the next most senior member of the committee the current ranking member on the Capital Markets Subcommittee and the former chairwoman of the Housing and Community Opportunity Subcommittee I hope to use my experience to continue and expand his work in the committee said Waters in a statement on Frank s retirement as reported in Politico. I will continue to champion practical regulations while making sure they work for consumers and the financial sector a sector which has the right to be profitable but the obligation to be fair two concepts which are not mutually exclusive. Those aren t her only qualifications either. Spirit Newspapers May 9 - May 15 2013 Page A3 Her husband sat on the board and had stock in minority-owned OneUnited Bank which has the distinction of being one of the few banks to ask the US Treasury for a bailout and not getting it... initially. But then on second thought after the Maxine Brigade got to work the Treasury finally coughed up 12 million. Waters set up a meeting with then-secretary of the Treasury Hank Paulson and the CEO of OneUnited Bank CEO along with her grandson who also acts as her chief of staff when he s not advising the secretary of the Treasury on banking matters. Banking talent runs deep in the Waters family. But perhaps the biggest gift to Republicans will be that Waters was and still is a huge fan of Fannie Mae. Human Events ranks Maxine s defense of Fannie as number five in the top ten most outrageous statements Waters has ever made As a senior member of the House Financial Services Committee Waters played a key role in allowing Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac s reckless actions that led to the housing meltdown. Here is Waters at a 2004 congressional hearing (and yes that is the same Frank Raines that vastly overstated Fannie Mae s earnings in order to receive 90 million in bonuses). We do not have a crisis at Freddie Mac and particularly Fannie Mae under the outstanding leadership of Frank Raines. Going forward they may want to rethink that ranking. And so should the GOP. Maxine Waters should be the poster child for the NRCC in 2014. John Ransom is the Finance Editor for Townhall Finance. You can follow him on twitter bamransom and on Facebook bamransom. Anonymous callers alerted Deputies to a suspicious car in Faulkville riding around with three males and no tag on the car. Deputies stopped the car and questioned the three men. All were currently on probation and after the Deputies found the bottle of liquor the pills and the powder were all under arrest of possession with intent to distribute. A man told Deputies that his neighbor had told him a woman with blonde hair and black roots had pulled up in his driveway and began loading things from his carport into the back of the pickup truck she was driving. When she noticed the neighbor was watching her she quickly drove away. (I ve always wondered why blonde-haired women will go to so much trouble to dye their roots a darker color ) A man told Deputies he d hired a man to move his mobile home. The man somehow managed to get the home stuck between two trees. The Deputies advised him to let the man attempt to cut down one of the trees so that if the home is damaged he d be responsible for it. The owner of the convenience store happened to be working when a young man came in the store and attempted to buy a pack of cigarettes. When the man became disorderly and argumentative the owner decided he wasn t putting up with that crap he ordered the man to leave the store. He began walking the man to the door when the man took a swing at him. The owner was able to shove him out the door when he did that. The Deputy apparently recognized the young man from the desciption and the description of the gray car he fled the scene in. He ll be serving the man with a criminal trespass notice to not return to the store. (Sounds like this young punk s lucky the old man didn t kick his butt ) Deputies served a warrant on a man at a home. The woman that answered the door was quick to point to the man in the bedroom and he was taken into custody. The other residents of the house insisted the Deputies take the man s clothes and personal belongings because they didn t want him coming back to the home whenever he gets out of jail. They also pointed out the four wheeler the man had at the house and told the Deputy they suspect it was stolen. A man called Deputies around 6 30pm and told them his roommate had stolen his BMW. The roommate was under the influence and the owner had tried to prevent him from taking off in his car. The Deputy then spotted the BMW driving down the driveway. You can t legally make me do the breathalyzer he said first thing to the Deputy. Smelling the alcohol on the man s breath the Deputy had the man submit to the field sobriety tests which he failed. He was taken to jail on DUI charges. A man called Deputies after receiving a phone call from one of those payday loan buinesses. The caller knew the man s social security number and obviously had his cell phone number. Further the caller said the man owed 319% of the loan but wouldn t advise him what the balance was. The man is not familiar with the company and wanted a fraud report on file. (That s a pretty heavy and probably illegal interest rate ) Deputies responded to a domestic dispute and arrived at the home where the woman claimed she was attempting to burn trash in her yard and her husband kept turning the water hose off. Pooler A man called Police and told them his car a white Mustang had been stolen overnight. He went on to explain that he and a couple of friends had gone drinking at Bahama Bob s then left for pizza at Mellow Mushroom. Because he had partaken in copious amounts of libation during the evening he called a friend to pick them up to take them home. A man walked outside at 8am to discover that someone had spray painted his maroon pickup with green and white paint. He doesn t remember any recent confrontations with anyone who may have done it. A little after 2am Officers responded to a convenience store where a man was passed out behind the wheel of his Ford Expedition with the engine still running. Officers tried knocking on the windows and even sounded their sirens while parked beside him but the man never flinched. They finally called the Fire Department to pry the doors open. When they did that the man woke up. The Officers asked if he knew where he was and the man replied that he was in Pooler on his way home. He then asked the man for his license and he handed over a pack of cigarettes. He also had a large Heineken in the cup holder in the center console. He was taken to jail for DUI Refusal. Officers responded to the Fun Zone family park where the manager had a strong suspicion that an employee was stealing from the company. Her register had come up 80 short the day before so he d asked the other supervisors to keep their eyes on the woman. They were watching as the woman made change for herself which is against company policy and they detained her for the Police to arrive. When they got there the woman admitted she d taken about 35 from the register so that she could pay her probation fines. She was arrested on theft by taking charges and then the Officer searched her pocketbook which led to an additional charge of possession of marijuana. An Officer was on patrol in the Savannah Quarters neighborhood around 2 30am. When he was travelling around one of the oneway traffic circles he was passed by a Kia Rio going the wrong way. He stopped the man and asked for his license. The man admitted his license was suspended and that the car belonged to his roommate. He blew a .224 and was taken to jail for DUI and driving while suspended. A woman told Police she d let another woman stay with her and her children after the woman had a falling out with her husband. Apparently this woman couldn t stand being around the Samaritan s young children and decided to move out while the other woman was at work. She took hundreds of dollars of clothing that belonged to the Samaritan including six Victoria Secrets bras valued at 300 and almost 900 in cash. She called and left a message on the woman s cell phone to return her money and clothes by noon the next day or she d be filing charges and have her arrested. Noon came and passed so she wants to have the woman picked up. Trouble is since she was living with the woman no one knows now where to find her. The victim believes she may be on the way to Albany Georgia. (Victoria Secrets gets 50 for a bra Guess they gotta pay for them Angel models somehow...) A woman was cleaning out the ditch in front of her home and found a black plastic garbage bag with bones inside. The Officer responding to the call turned it all over to Detectives to investigate. Just before 3am an Officer was in the centerlane of northbound I-95 when an orange Dodge Challenger passed him at 83mph in the 65mph zone. The Officer followed the Dodge and made a note of the times the driver crossed the lane lines. After the third time he activated his emergency lights to make a traffic stop. It took awhile but the man finally pulled over to the emergency lane. The Officer asked the man for his license and then asked where he was heading. The man slurred out something that sorta sounded like home. When the Officer told him he d clocked him at 83mph the man stared at his speedometer for a moment and finally said My car likes to go fast. The Officer then asked him Does it like to weave over the lane lines too He was arrested for DUI and taken to jail. A young woman began receiving correspondence from a young man via Facebook. She tried telling him she wasn t interested in talking with him so he sent her a picture of himself buck nakid. She s obviously filed a report with Police and is considering filing a warrant for his arrest. A woman filed a report after a pit bull wandered a little too close to her as she got into her car. There was a man with the dog but he wasn t holding onto the dog s leash and the dog was at her car door as she closed it. She filed the report and the Officer went and ____________________________________ Continued on page A8 Macomber Park Flood other properties. Continued from page A1 ____________________________________ This is more of a concern in riverine situations where a project may dam or divert flowing water onto other properties or increase flood flows downstream. To prevent this communities adopt floodways to designate those areas where flood flows are most sensitive to changes brought by development. REgULATORY FLOODWAYS As explained in Unit 3 Section B the floodway is the central portion of a riverine floodplain needed to carry the deeper faster moving water. Buildings structures and other development activities-- such as fill--placed within the floodway are more likely to obstruct flood flows causing the water to slow down and back up resulting in higher flood elevations. EMC Engineering is the contractor on the project. J. Mark Mobley Savannah Branch Manager of EMC and Mark Baumgartner the project manager on Macomb- er Park both told The Spirit they have no knowledge of Morris s compliant. Morris said that not only mud but also various large trash items such as tires and an old television have floated onto his property. His exterior building was flooded with between six and eight inches of water. Were it not for the fact that his home is a doublewide mobile home elevated by a foundation it would have also sustained similar damage. Whether Morris s problem is indeed the result of negligence on the part of the City and or its contractor is still under investigation. Some doubt that it is but Morris seems sure there can be no other explanation. In the meantime Morris said he and his wife would have to deal with the damage that has already happened as well as the additional damage he is fully expecting when the next hard rain falls. You had better go get the hair dryer Love you Goodbye As water continued to stream from the device I noticed that its screen which once had a picture of a verse of Scripture on it was blank. As it turned out the hair dryer was not very helpful. Drip drip drip... water kept coming out of the phone. When it stopped I began to tap it on the bathroom vanity. Water continued to come out for quite a while. Finally it had all drained out. I used a Lysol wipe to clean the outside and left it on a countertop to completely dry. The screen continued to be blank and looked as if someone had spilled ink on it. Abstract images that changed in shape over the hours filled the screen but I was able to make and receive calls on the phone...which was a true miracle However the screen remained blank and I wondered if I would ever be able to text-a-prayer again. When my daughter came home from school she picked up the phone which was still lying on the countertop. She inquired Mom what s wrong with your phone I dropped it in the toilet I answered. No you didn t she retorted. Yes I did I replied. She quickly put down the phone and said Ewewwww... I don t want to use it My pre-teen daughter didn t want to use my phone This was the second miracle The third miracle was that later that night my Scriptural screen was fully restored. Every Word was there and I was reminded of Isaiah 55 11 in which God states that His Word will not return void... 0) I continue to use my cell phone without complications. I can call and text and the phone is fully functional. God s miracles remind me that He is faithful and His goodness endures continually. (Psalm 52 1) When I tell this story most people are amazed and ask me what kind of phone I have. I declare that it is not the quality of the product but the goodness and grace of the God that I serve. He supplies all of my needs. I have to admit that I have had a little fun with this story. I tease Miss Anne. I say to her Jesus walked on the water and you talked UNDER the water ...and we laugh. Visit Brother Kenny s website at Miracle Phone the true tale of three tele-triumphs By Angie Usher http As a pastor s wife I use my cell phone for ministry much of the time. I use it to stay in touch with and encourage people...and oh yes it holds the record for containing the world s longest text-prayers. The technologies of this age afford us an amazing opportunity to minister anytime anywhere to anyone We are without excuse. Not too long ago I was folding towels when I received a call from one of the ladies at church. My phone does not work well in every room of the house but I felt that I would be able to put away the towels without having the call dropped. Needing both of my hands to open the bathroom closet door I placed the phone between my ear and shoulder and proceeded to put away the towels and... DROPPED MY CELL PHONE IN THE TOILET Hurriedly I placed the towels in the closet and retrieved my phone from the bowl. To my surprise I could still hear my friend talking away as I held the phone between my index finger and thumb with water streaming from the phone. Miss Anne I shouted. Miss Anne kept talking. The Light The Air and the Door While driving through the winding roads of Louisiana there was a light rain and the blacktop was a little slick. Sandy suddenly lost control of her car. The car was headed straight toward the bayou. It happened so fast she couldn t move quickly enough to escape from the sinking automobile. It was too dark for her to see clearly but there was a small light coming from the glove compartment which was now the highest point of the car. Quickly she made her way to the light. Surrounding the light was a small pocket of air. She drew a deep breath and began making one trip after another from the air pocket to the door handle and then back again for more air. The light that showed her the way and the air she was drawing into her lungs made survival possible. Then after what seemed like hours she finally managed to get the door open and swim to safety. Sandy s story is much like life. Are you experiencing a time of personal crisis or hurting because of chronic difficult circumstances in your life You may even be living in quiet desperation. If this is where you are today I want to tell you as a result of my own desperate searching that there is reality behind the picture here of the light the air the door and the escape. The light even if it appears small to you right now is enough to point you in the right direction. Jesus said I am the light of the world. The pocket of air near the light is a secret hiding place where you can come to Him and cast your cares on Him. In this secret place as you meditate in His word and talk to Him in prayer it will be life to you as the precious air was to Sandy. As you continue to do this He will continue to give you His peace and whether the circumstances change or not the One who loves you unconditionally will wrap you up in His arms and bring healing and comfort your heart. The door is both of these. It is the way out of your old life and into the new one God has for you. Jesus said I am the door. The escape is when you actually take that step of faith and turn from your old life and into the new receiving by faith God s offer of salvation by grace. If any man is in Christ He is a new creature. Old things have passed away behold all things have become new. The provision is there for you whether you take it is your choice. By Daphne Harrington and passed along by Continued from page A5 ____________________________________ Police Reports spoke with the dog s owner who said the dog is always on a leash The other day I was visiting with an old friend. During the conversation I asked I understand that you married Jane. Why Because she s different he replied. How different I asked She s the only one who would have me he explained. But there s One Who will accept everyone - unconditionally. Young or old rich or poor - our condition does not matter. Jesus said Come to me and then He added if you do come I will not cast you out. In all my years of serving God I have never heard anyone say I came to Jesus but He would not accept me. It has been just the opposite. Many have told me that Jesus was the only One Who would have them. They knew that when they came to Him they finally discovered One Who accepted them in spite of all that they had done. To become a Christian all you have to do is to come to Christ. Take Him at His Word. Visit us at and that people in the neighborhood are just scared because he s a pit bull. (A leash ain t much good if you re not smart enough to hold it ) Police were called to WalMart where a man had been wandering the aisles for over two hours. The man told managers he was being chased by people and he asked if he could spend the night inside the store. The Officers found the man and he couldn t explain who was chasing him or why they were chasing him although he did state that they d started chasing him at the WalMart on Hwy 17. They walked him to the exit and identified the F150 that belonged to him in the parking lot. But this guy was too scared to walk out the door and go to his pickup He asked if he could go inside the McDonald s there to get something to drink and to use the bathroom. He then called 911 and requested an ambulance. The Officer with him contacted dispatch then arrested the man for requesting an ambulance when he wasn t having a medical emergency. The man then admitted he d been doing Ice slang for methamphetamines the day before. He was taken to jail but the jailers refused to accept him due to his level of drug influence. So the Officer had to take him to Memorial Hospital to be cleared for the jail. He eventually got the man locked up. Officers responded to a local motel around 1 30am. They went to room 225 and the occupants said they d heard a woman screaming Stop hitting me in the room next to theirs. So the Officers went to that room and met with the woman who said that she and her husband had been in a verbal dispute. She said her husband had fled the area. Then the Officer looked behind the bathroom door and found the man hiding there. The woman didn t have any marks on her indicating any type of physical attack so both were advised of the consequences if they began arguing again and further advised to discuss the issues later with calmer attitudes. Security personnel were watching as the man pushed his buggy loaded with a comforter and a King Comforter set as well as a case of Budweiser up to the service desk. He returned 5 in merchandise for a refund then pushed the buggy to the exit where they stopped him. He explained that he was just going out to his truck to get his cell phone. The security officer got the man s personal information and saw that he d been banned from all WalMart s after he was caught shoplifting from the store on Hwy 17. The man left and didn t come back inside. Around 4am an Officer was westbound on I-16 searching for a car that had been reported stolen. He noticed the Corvette on the interstate that was all over the road as they headed into Bloomingdale s jurisdiction. He notified them on his radio that ____________________________________ Continued on page A10 Spirit Newspapers May 9 - May 15 2013 Page A9 Bloomingdale Alpha United Methodist Church 5 East Hwy 80 748-4062 Rev. Page A10 Spirit Newspapers May 9 - May 15 2013 Don t forget Mother s Day Lots of beautiful flowers and plants to pick from GREAT SELECTION OF tWiStiNG WoRDS iNto DouBleSPeak By Robert Knight America is awash in doublespeak. Words such as marriage conservatism bigotry tolerance and brave no longer have universal meaning and this is no accident. When confusion replaces clarity the devil breaks out the champagne. It s so much easier to push people toward the abyss when the stop signs are edited to say whatever. Doublespeak is language which makes the bad seem good the negative seem positive the unpleasant seem unattractive or at least tolerable wrote William Lutz author of the 1996 book The New Doublespeak. Washington Post reporter Theresa Vargas gave a perfect example in her recent article lauding benighted Maryland parents who are pushing for open homosexuality in the Boy Scouts. As for opponents well they re only concerned about legal liability and how Scout leaders will prevent same-sex dating during overnight trips. Yeah. That s it. Two boys sipping on straws from the same soda. Ever-vigilant to fight prudery in a debauched age liberal journalists are utterly puritanical when it comes to this topic. Perhaps they don t want people to think about it too much. The prize for doublespeak goes to the Post s Right Turn columnist Jennifer Rubin. Her hot buttons are social conservatives and the Tea Party. She frequently urges the Republican Party to throw them overboard or face oblivion. But why stop there In the Post s Sunday Outlook section she redefined conservatism itself in a full-page screed entitled Tear Down This Icon Why the GOP Has to Get over Ronald Reagan. Ms. Rubin says the Gipper was in a time warp and should be discounted. The old guard has become convinced that Reagan s solutions to the problems of his time were the essence of conservatism - not simply conservative ideas appropriate for that era she writes. Funny you never hear Democrats disowning Franklin Roosevelt or John F Kennedy. Republicans . on the other hand are supposed to abandon their principles their most reliable voting bloc and their heroes if they know what s good for them. Which of Mr. Reagan s conservative views were ephemeral Opposition to socialism and communism Belief in American exceptionalism Market-based economics Belief in the sanctity of life Suspicion of big government Reverence for the Almighty Mr. Reagan s lodestars were his faith in God the Constitution and the strengths of a free industrious people. Ms. Rubin urges us to cast him aside and replace him with uh whatever the cool people think is cool right now. The public face of the GOP can no longer be aging ill-tempered Reaganites such as John McCain and Jim DeMint Ms. Rubin scolds but must give way to a diverse media-savvy generation that understands the America we actually live in. Only then can the essence of conservatism - the promotion of personal liberty - survive and the GOP along with it. It s not surprising that someone who throws John McCain into the same basket with Jim DeMint would reduce the essence of conservatism to personal liberty. The latter is the product of a society built on God-given unalienable rights that governments cannot create and can only secure. Personal liberty while profoundly important is not an end in itself. Personal responsibility is just as important. Without it conservatism becomes a shallow quest for self-fulfillment a sort of New Age Conservatism. At that point it s a short trip to one s navel as the source of meaning. Ronald Reagan championed industriousness capitalism personal sacrifice patriotism faith kinship and community spirit. These things often interfere with one s personal liberty. Another word often abused by doublespeak is tolerance. It once meant living peaceably with those who might disagree. It grew out of the biblical conception of humility before God and the command to love one s neighbor. Now it means waging war on the moral order in pursuit of faux equality. Tolerance wrote G. K. Chesterton is the virtue of the man without convictions. The people today who wield tolerance like a commissar s bloody ax actually do not lack convictions they just want to punish anyone who does not share theirs. When pro basketball player Jason Collins came out the media went nuts. He was toasted from coast to coast received congratulatory phone calls from Barack Obama and Bill Clinton and made magazine covers. On May 1 Washington Post sportswriter Mike Wise joined the parade by bashing Old Testament moral certainty and denouncing anyone who trumpeted their bigotry under the guise of religious beliefs. There s no hint in Mr. Wise s vitriol that someone could possibly hold sincere faith-based moral beliefs. The Age of Tolerance is spawning attacks like this on faith by the truckload. And that brings us to our final word which is brave. Mr. Collins was widely hailed as brave but it s the few people who dared question the wisdom of his volitional behavior that are brave. A lynch mob is chasing ESPN the Magazine writer Chris Broussard because he reiterated classic Christian doctrine to an interviewer If you re openly living in unrepentant sin whatever it may be not just homosexuality [but] adultery fornication premarital sex whatever it may be - I believe that s walking in open rebellion to God and to Jesus Christ. So I would not characterize that person as a Christian because I don t think the Bible would characterize him as a Christian. Another brave soul is Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III who on April 30 tweeted In a land of freedom we are held hostage by the tyranny of political correctness. Like openly devout quarterback Tim Tebow Mssrs. Griffin and Broussard are the brave ones rocks in a floodtide of insanity and cowardice. As we watch word after word twisted into doublespeak by corrupt elites it brings to mind George Orwell s observation Political language . . . is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind. Monday-Friday 10-6 Saturday 10-2 he would be making a traffic stop and for them to head to his location. But when he hit his emergency lights the Corvette accelerated away. The Officer stopped his pursuit and notified Georgia State Patrol troopers who were in the area already for the previous lookout. They closed in on the Vette but the driver tried accelerating away from them as well. He s in jail now. Officers responded to a local hotel where two women claimed a man had broken into their room and robbed them of 350. Turned out to be a couple of hookers that had been robbed by one of their customers. Just after 1pm an Officer clocked a Jackonville man southbound on I-95 at 84mph in the 65mph zone. He made a traffic stop and the man admitted his license was suspended. The Officer place him under arrest and then inventoried the Pontiac before having it towed. Nothing illegal was found but the man did have a large supply of Mary Kay products in his car. A Pooler man known for helping others in the community fittingly enough is targeting the effort. Karmen Jenkins 20 is battling moyamoya a progressive cerebrovascular disorder caused by blocked arteries at the base of the brain. After complaining of headaches in March 2010 the South Effingham High student was diagnosed with the disease by a doctor in Savannah and subsequently referred to a specialist in California who had performed some 1 000 revascularization procedures for moyamoya. The disease primarily affects children and was first described in Japan in the 1960s. The Japanese word translates as puff of smoke and describes the tangle of tiny blood vessels formed to compensate for the blockage in the brain. Jenkins went through three weeks of testing before undergoing two surgeries on the left and right side of her brain in August of that year and returned to California for followup treatment in March 2011. Her mother Kim says Karmen suffered eight to nine typical of someone with moyamoya yet it could have been worse. A lot of people with moyamoya have major strokes or die Kim says. Karmen was definitely blessed to have just minor strokes. It s really a miracle she s alive. She adds that Karmen whom she describes as laidback and someone who loves children and animals has some difficulty concentrating and remembering facts and experiences occasional headaches. Karmen is scheduled for additional testing and treatment in August back in California. That s where Ike Laroche and the shotgun come in. Laroche is a close friend of Karmen s father Dennis who works at the family-owned Jenkins Plumbing in Pooler. He previously helped raise 2 500 through a Boston butts fundraiser to help the family with medical expenses as their insurance doesn t cover the plane fare or their accommodations. That s a pretty expensive trip for average people Laroche says. To help them cover their twoweek trip to California in August Laroche is planning a raffle June 15 at 2 p.m and says he hopes to raise 2 500 to 3 000. The prize is a 700 Remington Premier 20-gauge autoloading shotgun donated by an individual. that ll make stripes look good ) At 6 30pm an Officer was monitoring traffic on Jimmy DeLoach Parkway and clocked a tan Camry at 75mph in the 55mph zone. He made a traffic stop but the driver didn t pull over for a while. The Officer could see that the driver and passenger were apparently arguing. When the man finally pulled over the Officer got out to approach the car and the driver suddenly accelerated away again. When the Officer caught up with the Camry the driver had fled on foot through the woods. He was eventually caught by a Bloomingdale Officer off of Adams Road. He s in jail now on charges of fleeing and eluding Police driving while unlicensed obstruction and on two warrants that were posted for his arrest. Garden City Officers were called to a local pay-by-the-week hotel where a black Ford Ranger was parked behind the business and a man was under arrest for selling dope. The arrestee said he d just sold some crack cocaine to a woman in room 419. So the Officer along with a K-9 and a hotel employee went to the room. The employee used a master key to open the door. ____________________________________ Continued on page B3 Shotgun Raffle to Benefit Rincon Woman With Rare Disease By Stephen Prudhomme minor strokes before her surgery A June raffle offering a fancy shotgun as the prize will benefit Karmen Jenkins who has to return to California this summer to receive further testing and treatment for a rare disease. It is a blend of observations and experiences that have come over time from being in God s great outdoors. We re proud to offer this column for the outdoor sportsmen in our area.) I ve noticed that those of us who love the outdoors are always in the moment and yet are preparing for an upcoming moment. This time of year is especially true of this. While turkey season is in progress I am thinking about getting my gear ready for the river and am also making plans on doing the things now that will give me an opportunity at a big buck this fall. It is a constant circle of living reacting and planning. Again it is living in the moment reacting to whatever comes my way and preparing for the future. Just like most of life is. What most of us do each day is go to work as planned react to the unexpected circumstances that come our way whether from home or work and plan for the days weeks and or years ahead. And much of the time these are done simultaneously without a hitch. We have programmed our lives to live in the present and for the future. And it is wise to continue to do this. It is those who only live in the present who forfeit future success. What is worse are those who never understand that most of what we experience now is really in preparation for that future but not necessarily the future here on earth. For some reason most people think heaven will be one long floattrip a place where its inhabitants will simply float around on a cloud all day long. How boring would that be Or they think those in heaven will continually live on our knees giving thanks to God. This is not true as well. (Even though I m sure thankfulness and praise will be a big part) The truth is heaven will be communities. It will be about living working playing and a host of other things that I can t even imagine. It will be about family and fellowship. And while fishing may be involved there is no doubt the rules will be catch and release. Why do I share this information So that you and I can understand why we are here on earth. I think I can sum it up very quickly. We are here first of all so that we might respond to God s invitation to go to heaven. He wants everyone there. She d just put the crack inside the toilet tank. She soon admitted she d just bought it from the man they already had under arrest and now she was on her way to jail for possession of cocaine. Police responded to the hotel because someone had notified them of the Ford Ranger with the lights off but the engine running in the parking lot. There was a man in the passenger seat so the Officer approached him and asked for some ID. The man said the driver had run up to room 419 to visit a friend but that he d be back downstairs soon. The passenger was drinking from a beer in a brown paper bag. The Officer put him in investigative detention and handcuffed him. The driver soon came outside and he too was placed in handcuffs. The Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society (LDSS) announces the Fourth Annual Night of Champions set for Thursday May 9 2013 at The Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa. The public is invited to attend this event that celebrates the excellent contributions made by differently-abled adults who are employed contributing members of our community. Local businesses that both hire people with intellectual disabilities and encourage other area businesses to do the same will also be recognized. According to the National Down Syndrome Congress Center as many as eighty percent of adults with Down syndrome are unemployed. Low expectations and a lack of understanding about the great skills and wonderful work ethic many people with Down syndrome possess have contributed to this sad statistic. LDSS hopes to reverse this trend by encouraging area employers to give workers with intellectual disabilities a chance. Dignity and self-respect are borne out of feeling that what we have to offer makes a difference said LDSS Night of Champions Chairperson Allyson Harvin. When forward thinking businesses give those with Down syndrome or other differently abled adults a chance to be productive members of society society itself benefits. What is truly admirable is the employer who understands that differently abled employees are just that differently abled not disabled. The 2013 Night of Champions is being held in the Ballroom at Westin Savannah Harbor Hotel and the evening includes the awards ceremony a silent auction dinner and cash bar. Doors open at 6pm and business attire is requested. Tickets are 25 per person or reserve a table for ten for 250. Tickets can be purchased online at nightofchampions. org. Illustrations by W. Children animals as angels fairies with their pet cows dogs fetching music notes and other playful themes prevail. Many of my drawings look like illustrations searching for a story. W. Gerome Temple is originally from New Stanton PA and came to Savannah by way of Jacksonville FL to study graphic design at SCAD. He has been working as an illustrator for more than ten years. His intricate drawings are almost architectural in their exquisite detail. Choices A long time ago David Carradine starred in a television series featuring his kung-fu skills. Periodically the show would flash back to his developmental years and his kung-fu master would warn him by saying Choose wisely grasshopper. Last week one of Savannah State University s football players made a choice that nearly cost him his life. Strong safety wide receiver Vaughn Cornelia and his girlfriend went to a club on Broughton Street and stayed until closing. While leaving the club and driving through the crowd he and his girlfriend were shot. She suffered non-threatening wounds while he got shot in the chest and abdomen area. He was operated on and although he is still in intensive care he prayerfully is in the stage of recovery. Cornelia who I have had the pleasure of knowing and talking to often because I am one of SSU s sports announcer is a very aggressive player on the field. Off the field the 6-foot-5 210 pound player from Tennessee is one of the nicest kids you would ever want to meet. My heart goes out to him and his family. Only God knows if he will ever play football again but his quality of life is what matters most. His mother rushed down from Atlanta to be by her son s side and is a pillar of strength for her baby. That is what mothers are and that is why they are honored so much on this coming Mother s Day. The message that I want to convey in this article is that people always will make choices that seem routine. That corner of Jefferson and Broughton is a hot spot for criminal activity. The Satisfaction Restaurant closed its doors on that same corner due to lack of customers only days before the shooting.
